How to Install an Over the Range Microwave

Installing an over the range microwave can be an easy DIY project. Here are the steps you'll need to take:

1. Shut off the power. Make sure the breaker for the existing range hood is turned off. This will help ensure safety during installation. Or unplug as most units are plugged into an outlet in the upper cabinet.

2. Remove the old range hood. Locate the mounting screws but detach any ductwork or electrical connections before removing the screws. Remove the old hood completely.

3. Inspect the wall. Make sure the wall is in good condition with no obstructions such as backsplash tiles, granite etc. that could interfere with mounting the new microwave. Patch any holes as needed.

4. Measure for the new microwave and use the supplied template for new mounting holes. Take the dimensions of the new microwave and mark the placement on the wall. Make sure it is centered properly over the range.

5. Install the mounting plate. The new microwave will come with a mounting plate that attaches to the wall studs. Use screws to secure it firmly to studs or good hallow wall anchors at minimum. Hang the new unit and then secure the mounting screws.

6. Attach the ductwork. Connect the included ductwork to the exhaust port on the back of the microwave. Attach the other end to the existing duct or install a new duct vent to the outside.

7. Connect the electrical wiring or plug into outlet. Match the wires from the microwave to the existing wires - black to black, white to white, and green or bare copper ground wire to ground. Use wire nuts or connectors.

10. Test all the functions to ensure proper installation.
