Ceiling Fan Tips

In the US, the standard is three wires. Black, White, and Copper (Ground). Think of electricity like the flow of water. The switch turns on the power that goes through the black, through the switch, and to the light. The power then comes back through the white. If the black wire becomes disconnected, no power will reach the light. The ground is the safety net that prevents you from getting shocked.

  • Use a volt meter to verify the power is off, by checking black to white, and black to ground.

  • Get your fan, and cut the excess wire according to the length of the fan’s down-rod. Strip the ends, and follow each instruction carefully to put together the components of the fan.

  • Center the mounting bracket in place and secure it with screws. The ball joint on the fan will lock into place at this point.

  • Connect the ground, white, and hot wire in that order.

  • I like to use a regular screwdriver as I do not want to...

    • Scratch up the fan

    • Over-tighten the screws
